Many people try to paint their homes themselves. Today, when cost plays a big role in the maintenance of a home, many decide to do it, saving a significant amount of money that they can use on other household tasks. It is a difficult and time-consuming process, but with the proper instructions and preparation you can achieve very beautiful results.
Read the 3rd part of our advice on how to paint your home and avoid the mistakes of “amateurs” and a lot of fatigue.
If you can’t accurately or almost accurately estimate the coverage, it’s better to add more paint than less if this is your first time painting interior walls. You can then pour whatever is left back into the can.
If your room is large, use a large paint bucket to pour paint into the paint roller’s drum. It’s easier to fill without too many interruptions using a small container. Do a few tests to figure out what works best for you and makes your job easier.
Dip the paint roller into the paint drum, roll until you see paint build up but without dripping or staining the roller.
After painting each surface, wait for the paint to dry. If you think a second coat of paint is needed, repeat the entire process. Be careful to apply the paint evenly. Don’t constantly change the way you roll the paint roller. This way you will achieve a random result and save paint.
Straight lines are a common problem for amateurs. Professionals (due to experience) don’t use masking tape often. They have experience in making straight “cuts.” Fortunately, this is easily fixed with the use of masking tape. The secret is to take your time. Let the first coat of paint dry. Mask the edge of the paint where the second coat will “press” on. Start applying the paint without pressing too hard with your roller on the masking tape. Don’t leave the masking tape in place. Remove it slowly. The trick is to make sure it doesn’t stick to the first coat of paint and pull the paint off as you peel it off.
You’ll want to wait at least 24 hours for the paint to dry completely. Start in an area that no one will notice, then lightly clean it. Then, pull the tape off at a 45-degree angle.
Start by painting the trim first, then the ceilings, and finally the walls.
Professionals follow a specific painting routine (i.e., specific steps). You’ll see similarly good results if you follow this order. The first thing you should do is paint the trim, ceiling, and walls. This approach is easier and faster because it’s quicker to peel off the taped trim than it is to all the walls.
Then, when you paint the trim, you don’t have to be careful or neat. All you need to do is focus on ensuring a smooth finish on the wall. If you get a little paint on the walls, don’t worry, it will be covered with a new coat of paint.
Once the paint has dried on the finish (usually 24 hours), you can tape it off and start painting the ceilings and walls.
That’s it for our basic instructions.
