Prepare your home

Preparing your home for painting begins with assessing the condition of your home and planning the materials you will need. Remove any loose paint, sand down any rough spots, it is not necessary to remove the surface from all previous coats. Apply a coat of primer and fill any open holes in the wall or cracks in previous putties. Prepare each room by removing “sensitive” furniture. This includes protecting your windows and carpets. You can roll up carpets or cover them with plastic to protect them from any paint splatters you will use.

Gather as much furniture and materials as possible in the center of the room. This will give you ample space to work and minimize the risk of damage. It is also a good idea to cover furniture that cannot be moved. Clear drop cloths and paint plastic work well. Have wet tissues on hand. You can use them to clean up paint splatters before they dry.

Clean dirty surfaces before painting.

Dirty surfaces in the kitchen, for example, can prevent paint from adhering to the surface you are painting. Oil, dirt, and stains will make it difficult for the paint to adhere to the wall, and after a few weeks, you will notice the paint peeling. So, use a good cleaner or even a polish remover like TSP to clean the dirty areas. Pay attention to hand marks around switches and doorknobs.

Use a cleaner in circular motions with a lint-free cloth. It is best to start from the top down so that you can control the dripping of liquids from the cleaning. Once the surface is clean, you can spot the surface of the primer for imperfections and fill all holes and cracks, sanding the surface until it is smooth. Now you can start painting.

Always wear gloves and protective glasses. They are inexpensive and protect you from minor accidents.
